Younger Dryas ice margin retreat in Greenland: new evidence from southwestern Greenland

چکیده

Abstract. To date the final stage in deglaciation of Greenland shelf, when a contiguous ice sheet margin on inner shelf transitioned to outlet glaciers troughs with intervening ice-free areas, we generated cosmogenic 10Be dates from bedrock knobs six outlying islands along stretch 300 km southwestern coast. Despite inheritance influencing some dates, ages generally support Ice Sheet (GrIS) that retreated off during middle Younger Dryas (YD) period. Published 10Be- and 14C-dated records show this history GrIS is seen other parts but large variations extent speed retreat, sometimes even between neighbouring areas. Areas chronology extending into Allerød period no marked change at Allerød–YD transition except northernmost Greenland. In contrast, landforms (moraines grounding zone wedges) have been suggested indicate YD readvances or long-lasting stillstands shelf. However, these features dated primarily by correlation cold periods core temperature records. retreat late explained advection warm subsurface water increased seasonality. Our results therefore point complexity climate–ice relation urgent need for direct dating early

Younger Dryas cooling and the Greenland climate response to CO2.

Greenland ice-core δ(18)O-temperature reconstructions suggest a dramatic cooling during the Younger Dryas (YD; 12.9-11.7 ka), with temperatures being as cold as the earlier Oldest Dryas (OD; 18.0-14.6 ka) despite an approximately 50 ppm rise in atmospheric CO(2). Such YD cooling implies a muted Greenland climate response to atmospheric CO(2), contrary to physical predictions of an enhanced high...

Early deglacial onset of southwestern Greenland ice-sheet retreat on the continental shelf

The Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) advanced onto the continental shelf during the last glacial period. While deglacial records for when the GrIS withdrew onto the modern coastline are relatively abundant, the timing of early GrIS retreat on the shelf is poorly constrained. Here we use planktic foraminiferal d18O, sediment grain size, sedimentation rates, and 14C ages in southeastern Davis Strait co...

Large Pt anomaly in the Greenland ice core points to a cataclysm at the onset of Younger Dryas.

One explanation of the abrupt cooling episode known as the Younger Dryas (YD) is a cosmic impact or airburst at the YD boundary (YDB) that triggered cooling and resulted in other calamities, including the disappearance of the Clovis culture and the extinction of many large mammal species. We tested the YDB impact hypothesis by analyzing ice samples from the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2)...

Arctic cyclone water vapor isotopes support past sea ice retreat recorded in Greenland ice

Rapid Arctic warming is associated with important water cycle changes: sea ice loss, increasing atmospheric humidity, permafrost thaw, and water-induced ecosystem changes. Understanding these complex modern processes is critical to interpreting past hydrologic changes preserved in paleoclimate records and predicting future Arctic changes. Cyclones are a prevalent Arctic feature and water vapor ...
